TRAIL in Oral Cancer: A Review
UNDER GRADUATE, ADHIPARASHAKTHI DENTAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL, INDIA
TNF related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL) / apo2 ligand is a protein which belongs to member of TNF family, which initiates apoptosis through engagement of death receptors.
The most interesting fact about TRAIL is that it can induce apoptosis in the tumor cells sparing the normal cells. Even though the TRAIL induces apoptosis in the cancer cell some cancer cell lines are found to be resistant to TRAIL, so by combining the TRAIL with the chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It is possible to eliminate the tumor and establish good prognosis after treatment.
This article reviews the basics of TRAIL, it’s receptors and how it selectively induces apoptosis in oral cancer and also clinical trail performance and its reliability in cancer treatment.
